Before you can build something that lasts together, you have to see what each of you is carrying โ the visible work, the invisible weight, the wounds you packed in childhood, and the weight the world handed you for being who you are.
"The argument was never really about the dishes."
You'll each get your own private result โ no peeking at each other's answers. Then you compare over one honest conversation. Couples who both take it get the full picture: your load, their load, and the gap nobody's been naming.
This last part is two short reflections in one: 10 questions about your childhood, drawn from the landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study โ and 8 questions the original research left out. That study was built decades ago on a mostly white, middle-class population. It never asked about the racism and systemic stress our community carries. So we added what it missed.
Some of these may touch hard memories. You're in control the whole way: choose "I'd rather not say" on any question, or skip this whole section โ your load results will still be complete. Naming this weight isn't about reliving it. It's about understanding why you and your partner may both be exhausted by things that were never yours to carry.
Just Us-Unpackingโข is building something bigger than a quiz: a body of understanding about how couples โ especially Black couples โ carry love and labor. With your permission, your de-identified answers may help.
๐ก While we calculate โ this works best when both of you take it.
See exactly what you're carrying โ with receipts โ plus your strengths, your watch-outs, and where to go from here. We'll email you a copy so you and your partner can revisit it any time.

The way you carry weight in your marriage today is rarely random. It often traces back through three layers โ what you learned as a child, what the world taught you to brace against, and the roles that quietly hardened over timeโฆ
When you feel overwhelmed, you tend to go quiet and just handle it. Your partner reads that asโฆ
Who we are. The Baggage Checkโข is an educational, self-reflection tool created by Just Us-Unpackingโข, developed by a social work researcher (MSW). It is not therapy, diagnosis, or clinical treatment, and it is not a substitute for professional mental health care.
What we collect to send your results. To email your result, we collect your first name and email address, along with your baggage type and your four load scores. This is stored securely and used to send your report and occasional updates from Just Us-Unpackingโข. You can unsubscribe at any time.
The sensitive questions are never stored. Your individual answers to the childhood-experiences (ACE) and systemic/racism questions are never saved to our database. They are used only in the moment to generate your report on your screen, and are then discarded. We never keep a record of how you answered those specific questions.
If you opt in to research โ what that means. If you check the research box, we add an anonymous row to a separate research record containing only numbers: your baggage type, your four load scores, your ACE score and systemic score as totals (never the individual answers), and the month you took it. This research record contains no name, no email, no IP address, and nothing that can be traced back to you. It is stored separately from your contact information, and the two are never linked.
How research data is used. These anonymous numbers help us understand broad patterns in how couples โ especially Black couples โ carry household and emotional labor and early-life experience, and help us improve this tool. Findings may appear only in aggregate (for example, "couples with higher systemic-weight scores also tended to report higher invisible load") in reports, education, or presentations. Because the data is anonymous, individual responses can never be identified or disclosed.
It's optional and changes nothing. Participating in research is completely voluntary. Opting in or out does not change your results or your access in any way.
Withdrawal. You can stop receiving emails anytime via the unsubscribe link. Note that because research rows are fully anonymous and unlinked to you, we cannot locate or remove a specific anonymous row after submission โ but it contains nothing identifying.
Your data is not sold. We do not sell your information. We use trusted services to run the tool (such as secure database, email, and payment providers) who process data on our behalf.
